Real Talk Wit Raze - Why Marriage is Flawed

Marriage is fundamentally flawed.

I know this is gonna come off as hypocritical and hindsightish, but I've actually ALWAYS felt this way. I've always found the idea of marriage, 2 becoming one, family, love, togetherness, etc, to be cute and borderline awesome, IN THEORY.

In actuality, excuse me, in PRACTICE, it's absolutely asinine and completely illogical given the fundamental nature of PEOPLE. People are sheep, we're described this way in one of the most holy scribes of text known to man, The Bible. We are followers by nature, that essentially go wherever we are led by whomever happens to be carrying the biggest rod at the time. And with the exception of a few stray, wandering members of the herd, everything usually tends to fall into order. So throughout history society, primarily Christian society, has taught us that morally a lot of stuff is "wrong" to do outside of marriage. Not only are these things wrong and deviant, but that the ultimate goal of life's completion is getting married. Why? Forgive me if I missed that day of Sunday school, but I don't exactly remember anyone ever explaining WHY marriage is so important. From my understanding and personal experience, the only significant things achievable through marriage are LEGAL, not spiritual or moral or fundamental.

My issues with marriage stem from it's direct dismissal of human nature. From our carnal desires, to our inter-personal dealings with one another, to how we care for ourselves.

As single folk, a major driving force is to find a mate. Contrary to conventional Christian teachings, don't confuse this with SOULmate. A person to mate with. Whether that be for the purpose of purely carnal procreation, or to actually reproduce, this is the subconscious force that drives us. This drives us to present ourselves in ways found attractive to the opposite (or sometimes the same) sex. Working out to keep physically fit. Staying fashionably "hip" and of course socially on point as well. Now these are some of the physical things we do. Men are primarily driven to appear financially secure, with physical fitness being a close second. Because women are attracted to security and "feeling safe". Women are primarily driven to appear visually appealing and nurturing, since the nature of the woman is to care for family and a "soft place to land" for her mate.

As single dating folk, typically we never deal with each other as our "real selves", more so as our "representatives". The cordial, hyper-attractive/interesting versions of ourselves that are far more rarely exposed than would seem during the dating period. So, it goes without saying THIS is the BEST 2 people will EVER get along and/or be attracted to one another.

Now, there's a fundamental difference in men and women here that can NOT be ignored. Men are very visual and are not keen on CHANGE. Women LOVE change because women like things NEW and FRESH. There's a reason I bring this up...

In my opinion the greatest irony of men vs women, is the idea of personal CHANGE and EVOLUTION. Men fall in love with the idea that our mates will not significantly change over time. While women, who typically feel that men should accept them for who they are "as is", faults and all, spend most of their time once in a serious relationship trying to "change" or "train" the man they've chosen as a mate. This is ironic because these are CORE fundamental differences in who we are as a species, and without true understanding of these differences, we are doomed to succumb to them.

Now, after having LIGHTLY touched on some of my thoughts on human nature (yes, I know it goes a LOT deeper) here are some of my faults with marriage.

1. Marriage is Monopolizing - In business, there are many reasons monopolies are bad and illegal. One of the primary reasons being its bad for the consumer. With a monopoly there's no incentive for the producer to provide a "better product" or keep customer service top notch. Marriage is the same way in my opinion. With the rules set that you are contractually obligated (stuck) with this same service provider, even when you are completely dissatisfied with their product, you are essentially STUCK with no option to go Sprint vs you're horrid UScellular service.

2. Marriage breeds laziness - When people get comfortable, they chill. "Yeah that's right...they chill" (c) Oran Juice Jones. When this laziness kicks in, the dinners, movies, mini golfing, walks in the park are all replaced by dinner in, on the couch, watching tv, and all around inactivity as a whole. This is compounded by children, sometimes understandably so, but non the less, the issue holds poignant.

3. Marriage promotes delusions of entitlement - Look, you may be married, but you're still a grown ass man/woman. Your wife isnt your slave and your husband isn't your field hand errand boy. It's not your wife or husband's duty to do ANYTHING you're fully capable of doing for yourself. That's just laziness shrouded in the cloak of spousal entitlement.

4. Marriage is the Murderer of Individuality - You pay bills together, you go to family functions often neither of you want to attend together, etc. You get so caught up in living the lives of Mr & Mrs Smith, that you forget about John and Jane. John still wants to go hang with the boys, but feels he needs Jane's permission because she wants "quality time". Jane wants to hang out with her girlfriends, but doesn't because she feels she has ish to do at home, because lets face it, "A woman's job is NEVER done...". When you lose the sense of self, it is ultimately the killer of the RELATIONSHIP. Being married doesn't give anyone the right to disrespect the other's space and time for themselves. As a matter of fact, if both parties embraced each other's right to space, the marriage would thrive because of it. Remember when you were dating and you only saw each other MAYBE twice a week? The feeling of actually MISSING that person? Well, when married you see that motherfucker EVERYDAY, in the worst form they come in. Without time away, be it short, occasional trips with the homies out, or nights with the girls, being separated from one another, if you TRULY love that person will make you appreciate them even more. Plus, maybe more importantly, it will keep you SANE by knocking down a wall or two of your "marriage cubicle".

I could go way further and touch on so much more as I've obviously put much thought into the subject. I'm not trying to make too many difinitive statements or condemn any one side here. Mainly to spark discussion and get US talking more so we can have a better understanding of one another.

You don't have to like ME to like my music.

As a matter of fact, I would almost prefer it, mainly because I'm a glutton for dynamic relationships and compromising circumstances. Lately I've been thinkin about the differences in our entertainment industry NOW versus how it was circa 1989. I chose that year because it was to my belief, the turning point. The point where the lines of being fans, friends and stalkers were ultimately blurred to the transparent nothingness they are now. See, around that time the internet started gaining popularity, and the ever so important "Reality Show" pandemic started its worldwide scurge on humanity. These two elements converged, creating a perfect storm of everyman attention whorism, NEVER witnessed by generations past.

See, there used to be news stories about "stalkers". Remember those? They used to follow celebs around, break into their homes, steal their belongings and basically reek havok on their personal lives? Yeah, well they've been replaced by youtube, live streaming video feeds and of course, TWITTER. The age of the stalker and the "tour following fan" have been replaced by TMZ.com, tweeting nutcases and handheld HD camera concert footage uploaded to worldstar.com.

So, now that I've stated what many will refer to as "the obvious", what does it mean to artists? Simple, it means "fans" don't know their place as FANS. All of a sudden being a fan of the music simply isn't enough. Now you gotta know the artists shoe size, what they wore to bed last nite and what they were eating at PRECISELY 4:27pm on February 11th of 2008. Not meant in the slightest bit disrespectfully, but our personal lives are just that, PERSONAL. Some of us share so much thru our music that giving any more (especially if its unintentionally) is painfully gut wrenching. For example, the whole Nas/Kelis divorce. That was way too much and quite frankly, I don't care about his personal issues (whether celeb marriage or not) to know what his alimony/child support payments are. Ultimately my relationship with him (no brokeback) isn't dependent on that. Its his MUSIC that makes or breaks how we "kick it". I've never lost friends because they didn't like my music. I've also never made friends because they DO like my music either.

Its ok to just dig someone's music and leave it at that. It makes you no less a fan at all. Once the CD ejects, so do WE.

Raze's Engineering tips...pt. 1

I figure I'll occasionally help some of the new jacks out and post up some tips to get ya'll mixes sounding a lil better.

For starters, when making your final pre-master mix, assuming you're recording digitally (into a computer), the best rule of thumb is to export you're final mix with LOTS of headroom. This way the mastering engineer has more "volume space" to work with. You may need some eq, and you'll definitely need some compression to make ur final mix "louder" and commercial release ready.

I suggest having your final mix peak no higher than -12db on the master level meter. If anything is lacking in eq/effects, and finally compression, these should be added in the final master of the song. So give your mastering engineer some room to do his job.

As a sidenote, also make sure that your channel faders are NEVER higher than your master channel fader. For example, if your master channel fader is set to -4db, NONE of your individual track faders or bus faders should be higher than -5db, and personally I think THAT'S too close. I can't explain why this is a classic rule of thumb other than headroom/bandwidth issues, but IT IS. Believe that, and make adjustments. Trust me you'll hear the difference.

So, to those of you unfortunate enough to have NOT been in attendance, Coppa's album release party was AMAZING. Great turn out, crowd was awesomely into the performances, they loved the "grab bags" and some awesome people from the scene showed love (shout out to FlagshipLabel, amongst others...sorry for the lack of name dropping.)

With that, RAZE APOLOGIZES FOR ANY AND ALL CREEP-TASTIC activity he may have ALLEGEDLY displayed. I personally blame the alcohol (c) Jamie Foxx, and assume no responsibility for any ALLEGED things I may have done along the lines of boob fondling, booty smacks, unsolicited piggy back rides, boobie-shots (I don't remember her name, but she ALLEGEDLY let me take a shot from her clevage, she's awesome...whoever she is/was).

“Lets Put a Smile On That Face”

Reinventing the wheel can be overrated, unnecessary, and sometimes just plain dumb. There is something to be said for sticking to a proven formula and bringing something that makes it entertaining and successful. The House of M, which consists of “Dj DeadBeat, Gambit, D’Matikk, Trellmatic, Raze, Ecko, Dylan Thomas, Lou-Tang, Dana Coppa, & A.P.R.I.M.E.”, have managed to do both.

The House of M’s new album The Alternate Reality Of… begins where any well-rounded hip-hop album might, with a good skit! “106th & Burliegh” pokes fun at the landscape of today’s Hip-Hop while keeping it light-hearted & entertaining. What House of M has done well, besides creating skits that are even funnier on second and third listens, is put together a cohesive album that is well balanced despite all of it’s many moving parts. Between the superhero movie samples, top-notch crisp production, and various emcees sharing the mic, there are many dangerous cliffs for them to fall off. They manage to drive through the rugged terrain with a nod and a smile.

“Superman Ain’t My Name” borrows its concept from the Iron Man news conference, but has the outcome of the news conference from The Dark Knight; with the various emcee‘s not accepting the claims that they’re Superman. Interestingly they pull it off.

Dana Coppa's verse is a stand out and displays a flow that rides the laidback soul infused beat easily with lyricism to match. “…my weakness green but it’s not kryptonite/ and when I grip the mic/ I use my super vision to pick out which chick I’m finna take home and hit tonight.”

Other standout tracks include “Breakin Free” Ft. Speakeasy, Wave Nouveau, Day In The Life Of…, and the hilarious “Wack Poetry Jam” that is the highlight of all of the skits on the album.

Overall "The Alternate Reality Of…" isn’t groundbreaking in its format or structure but it has allowed me the luxury of not hitting the skip button once in three listens and it’s feel good Hip-Hop that puts a smile on your face. The album is an above average effort from a local group that sounds like they’re on a major label's roster. You’ll catch me in the whip bumping this for a minute.

Around the time that this blog was reborn earlier this year, we seemed to find Milwaukee's (and Wisconsin in general) hip-hop scene. I can’t recall how we stumbled upon it but we haven’t looked back since. I’ve never been to Wisconsin nor did I know people there before but I’m happy to have found some of the hip-hop cooking up in the area.

As one of my favorite female Milwaukee emcee, Melissa Czarnik, said to me recently, “we are most definitely brewing something other than beer here in Milwaukee right now.”

It’s such a true statement. They are brewing up some great hip-hop. The House of M is one of those examples.

The homie Dana Coppa hit me up a few weeks back with the early release of this House of M project. It sat on the desktop for a few days but once I got the chance to listen to it, the joint impressed me immediately. House of M The Alternate Reality of … is true hip-hop! The crew straight out of Wisconsin is made up of producers D’Matikk, Trellmatic, Dylan Thomas and Lou-Tang; emcees Gambit, Ecko, A.P.R.I.M.E. and Dana Coppa; emcee and producer Raze and DJ DeadBeat. Together the crew creates a powerful sound, rich with classic hip-hop influences and a style of their own.

Their tracks are dope! Production is tight! The flow is great! The interludes are amazing! Every track is great as a solid standalone but come together nicely to tell a story of the “Mutants” that form the House of M.

What really impressed me, outside of their flow and story telling technique in tracks like Superhero Shorties, The Initiative, Superman Ain’t My Name and In Your Mind – were their interludes. House of M Origins: Dr. Wacktagon, The Auto-Tuned Villain Part 1

The world has seen it's share of villains, but none are more powerful or dangerous that Dr. Wacktogon. For those who aren't familiar with the doctor, I'm certain that you're familiar with his handy work. He is the man behind all of the wack music the you've heard in the past twenty years. He's the reason that radio plays the same ten songs all day long. He's also responsible for Bet & MTV playing more reality shows than music videos. But, what would possess a person to do such evil deeds? How could a person knowingly destroy the music industry without any remorse? Things weren't always like that...

Fredrick Wachtavius III was born in Brookfield, WI. His parents were both Professors at UW-Milwaukee with doctorates in music and english. Fredrick was exposed to an array of music and literature. He was reading Edgar Allen Poe and James Baldwin at the age of eight and proficient in piano and violin as well. His parents wanted to make sure that their only child was well cultured. Fredrick III loved to write poetry, but it was music that captured his soul. After hearing "Rapper's Delight" he decided to devote his heart to Hip-Hop. He spent everyday listening to and studying various rappers. He worked on his swagger, look and flow until he had it perfected. Finally, Fredrick was ready, he would no longer be known by his government, but by his new moniker...Grandmaster Fresh!!!

Grandmaster Fresh was the best of the best. He was notorious for ending battles after spitting one verse. After running out of competiton in Milwaukee, his parents suggested that he record a demo and head for New York City. It was 1988, Fresh headed to the "Big Apple" with four songs of pure brilliance. It didn't take long for him to make connections, he was at a party in Brooklyn and witnessed a cipher with some hip-hop heavyweights. The cipher had Kool Moe Dee, Prince Markie Dee, Heavy D, Parish Smith and Biz Markie on the beatbox. Grandmaster Fresh was so amazed and excited to be there, he just jumped right in. Everyone's jaws dropped as Fresh ripped through his whole rhymed book. What was supposed to be a private cipher, turned into the highlight of the party. When it was all over, Fresh received daps and hugs from all of the MC's and they requested to hear his demo. Kool DJ Red Alert was spinning at the set and he played it for the party and the crowd went wild. Fresh thought that the excitement was over once the party ended, until an A & R from Sleeping Bag Records begged him to come to a meeting at the label first thing in the morning....

House of M Origins: Cyanide Lou & A.P.R.I.M.A.L.

On an ordinary day in the basement of a modern-day superheroes' mansion, Cyanide Lou (played by Joe Budden), and A.P.R.I.M.A.L. (9th Wonder), are working on their latest project, "Primal Poisoning," when a distraught Professor Ecks (Lupe Fiasco), informs them that they have just lost funding for their long-awaited project. The original financial backer and confidant of the House of M, Aultmon Capital Management Group, has fallen due to the current financial woes of the world and is barely able to monetarily maintain its own operations. Distant member of the House of M, S. Dot MCrary (Silkk the Shocker), whose involvement in Milwaukee's criminal underworld leads him to an alternate sponsorship from the city's biggest rap-recording/drug overlord crime boss, Dutch Wacktagon (Treach). Not knowing the background of this fiendish crook-turned-Milwaukee rap mogul, Cyanide Lou and A.P.R.I.M.A.L. agree to receive his questionable funding.
After completing their classic work, the album is submitted to Dutch for final approval and distribution. He approves the project and "Primal Poisoning," is ready to be pressed and released to the awaiting hip-hop world.
At the albums listening party, the venue's DJ plays the "traditional" artists that Dutch is accustomed to signing, and as the party builds to a peak, Lou & P.R.I.M.A.L. are introduced to the crowd. Lou & P.R.I.M.A.L. set the mood perfect with their well-spoken introduction to, "Primal Poisoning." If not like turning the pillow to the cool side only to find a smelly batch of discomfort, the speakers blare out piercing synth beats, with A.P.R.I.M.A.L.-sounding rhymes, but certainly not P.R.I.M.A.L.'s rhymes verbatim. Thinking this is a mistake, Lou attempts to apologize to the crowd only to be escorted off the stage by Dutch's henchmen who cynically explain that this was a set-up to bring Milwaukee's sacred hip-hop scene into the grasp of the Wacktagon empire.
"No one will ever go for this shit!," A.P.R.I.M.A.L. responds. "Oh really?," Dutch asks while glaring over the crowd. "It would seem as if it's working already." Lou and P.R.I.MA.L. look to the crowd to see their peers, with whom they've shared distaste for this type of wackness, getting crunk to the music and reciting the cliche hook...
"GET LOW HO/ TO THE FLO HO/
NOW BOUNCE THAT ASS TO THE BEAT/
NOW BOUNCE THAT ASS TO THE BEAT/"
The song becomes an instant hit and is heard on the radio all across the Midwest, then garners national attention. Now it is up to the two men who still have hip-hop's best interests in mind, to save it...

Ricky "Gambit" Downs (Played by Will Smith) awakens to a blinding white light and finds himself in a world full of wack emcees. He teams up with Super-Producer D'Matikk (Omar Epps) and his brother TrellMatic (Delroy Lindo) to create an alternate reality of great music. Along the way, they meet a group of those unaffected by what has been identified as "M Day;" the explanation for the blinding white light. The first individual they meet, A.P.R.I.M.E. (Darius McCrary) introduces them to: Lou-Tang (Common), The S Dot (Nas), and Dana Coppafeel (Shia LaBouf).

They soon find that an unknown scientist named Dr. Wacktagon has captured their rhyme partner Professor Ecks (Orlando Jones), and has created this new reality of wackness.
